London Bride Falling Down?
My retina falling off? What are the signs/symptoms of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)?
Increasing floaters, photopsia, constricting visual field(Curtain-down feeling), painless visual loss and continuous blur are all signs of the RRD. Emergent visit to an ophthalmologist is recommended.
How to treat it?Is this emergent?
If you have got 'rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD)", it means there is a retinal hole/break causing your sensory retinal to detach from underlying retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE).
If the macula is "on", yes, this is emergent!
If the macula is "off", sort of, you still need to treat it within 7-14 days.
If left untreated, blindness is forseen.

If the area of detachment is very small, we can treat it with laser- retinal photocoagulation.
If the area is small and located superiorly, we can use pneumatic retinoplexy. This means we will inject some gas to flatten the detached retina. However, we seldom do this in Taiwan.

For large-area RRD, we can do scleral buckling, vitrectomy or combined operation.
For multiple-break or large break, vitrectomy or combined operation is suggested.

This could be an office-operation, but majority of patients in Taiwan favor to have inpatient for 2-4 days.
How much does it cost in Taiwan?
Under the national health insurance program(NHI), you may need about 200-500 USD out-of-pocket, while the NHI will pay about 1200 USD for your treatment.
If you are a self-pay Taiwanese patient, the cost will be about 1000-3000 USD.
If you are an international patient, the cost will be about 2-10K USD depends on which surgeon/hospital you choose.

Success rate and complications
The success rate for first-attempt operation is 80-90%. Re-operation is anticipated for patients with multiple breaks, inferior breaks, or prolifertive vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Cataract formation, elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), strabismus, and refraction change are common complications.
